Whales and Abalone Tour from Cape Town including a stop at Stoney Point

Get collected directly from your hotel in the majestic Cape Town, and travel to Hermanus along the scenic coastal beauty of Clarence Drive. Your first stop will be at Stoney Point, in Betty’s Bay, at one of two dedicated land based African penguin breeding colonies.

A refreshment stop will take place in Kleinmond before we make our way to Hermanus, to the Heart of Abalone. After a short explanation on Abalone, otherwise known as perlemoen in SA , you will boot up and take a walking tour to see abalone up close in their natural and farmed environment.. This is followed by an optional abalone tasting. Lunch will follow at Harbour Rock, overlooking the Hermanus new harbour before we board the whale watching cruise in Walker Bay, Hermanus. The cruise will take approximately an 2 – 2½ hour’s. We will then travel back to Cape Town via the N2 over Sir Lowry’s Pass, passing the historical towns of Elgin and Grabouw.

The Whale and Abalone Tour starts at 08h00 when you are picked up from your city hotel in a 2016 Ford Tourneo minibus that seats 7 guests. Ian, the owner operator will be your driver/guide for the day. We head out of the city along the N2 and take the beautiful scenic route along Clarence Drive to Stoney Point at Betty’s Bay. Here at you will see one of the only two land based African penguin breeding colonies, with the other being Boulders Beach on the opposite side of False Bay. The abandoned Whaling Station site where 300 whales were once killed annually for their oil (from 1917 – 1930) now gives birth to new life as penguins naturally selected breeding ground. After experiencing the sighting of African penguins, we go to Kleinmond for a refreshing cup of coffee or tea. A half an hours drive later we arrive in Hermanus, arguably the best land-based whale watching location in the world.

We visit Heart of Abalone where we will be provided the opportunity to see how Abagold, a working abalone farm operates. This rock-clinging sea snail is traditionally known for their great taste. Also known by it’s Afrikaans name “perlemoen” referring to it’s mother-of-pearl shell. Learn about the life cycle of this interesting sea snail, the challenges of the farming process, as well as the culture and history of this unique molluscs for South Africans and Chinese. Once the farm walk through is completed, we remove our boots that we were provided with and can now partake in the tasting of this delicasy. The tasting is for your own account and you will be spoilt with a delicious presentation of 3 ways in which abalone can be prepared. After this rare taster we head off to Harbour Rock restaurant.

The beauty of Harbour Rock restaurant is that it is situated on a cliff and overlooks Hermanus harbour from where we will embark on our whale watching cruise. The extensive highly acclaimed menu will for sure satisfy your taste buds. From mussels to mutton, you will be spoilt for choice. Acclaimed by locals and tourists alike, this is a restaurant that draws people back to Hermanus time and again.

After lunch the highlight of the tour begins. We board Miroshca, the purpose-built catamaran from where we will experience the beauty of the oceans majestic mammals in Walker Bay. Whale watching is only offered from June to November when these huge creatures visits the waters of the Cape.

The full-day tour departs from your centrally located downtown Cape Town, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, or Atlantic Seaboard (Mouille Point, Sea Point, Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay) hotel accommodation around 9am.

You’ll first be driven in an air-conditioned minivan to the Company Gardens downtown. There, you’ll embark on a walk toward the city center, strolling past the National Library, Cape Town Parliament, and St. George’s Cathedral. You’ll continue through the heart of the old city where you will find some of Cape Town’s oldest and most prestigious galleries, antique shops, and auction houses, and visit The Cape Gallery flanked by colorful Georgian and Dutch facades. You’ll then return to the Company Gardens for a visit to the South African National Gallery. Back in the minivan, you’ll travel to the village of Muizenberg, home to Casa Labia. Built in 1929 to reflect the spirit of 18th century Venice, Casa Labia is the former Muizenberg residence of Count and Countess Natale Labia. Today it is a contemporary South African art gallery, an uber-stylish Africa nova boutique, as well as a celebrated Italian café where you can enjoy a light and delicious lunch (at your own expense).

You’ll then continue on to the quaint seaside village of Kalk Bay where the pace of life is a little slower, and explore its quirky shops, antiques, crafts, and art. Traditional fishing vessels still return with the ‘catch of the day’ to the little port, while surfers enjoy surfing one of the best reefs in Cape Town. Established in 1995, The Kalk Bay Gallery, housed in the distinct Orange Building overlooking False Bay, is reputed to have one of the most comprehensive selections of original contemporary South African art. You’ll have time to explore its unique selection of over 3000 art works from international and South African artists for sale.

Finally, you’ll return to your Cape Town accommodation in the late afternoon. This tour is not wheelchair accessible, and a moderate amount of walking is required. Note that two people per booking is required.

Marine Big 5 Safari from Cape Town: includes a visit to our newly build African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary

Operating around the world famous Dyer Island where you might be so fortunate to see the Marine Big 5 – the Southern Right Whale/Humpback/Bryde’s Whales, the iconic Great White Shark, the Cape fur seal (around 60 000 on Geyser Rock), the endangered African Penguin and various visiting dolphin species. The area is also home to a wide variety of seabirds.

You will arrive at The Great White House where we a restaurant, bathroom facilities and curio shop are situated. Upon arrival tea, coffee an muffins will be served. In the conservation and education room, you will receive an in-depth briefing regarding the area that you’ll be operating in, as well as conservation work and safety. You will be equipped with inflatable life jackets and wet weather gear in case of cooler weather conditions.

It is a short walk down to the harbour to enjoy an exhilarating trip on custom designed Dream Catcher. The Southern Right Whale Season is normally from June – December, but for the rest of the year the area is so fortunate to occasionally see some Humpback and Bryde’s whales. Other stops include a visit to the shark cage diving vessels to view great white sharks and then head to Dyer Island and Geyser Rock for the penguins and seals. You may also spot one of three dolphin species that visit: the Common dolphin, the Humpback or the Indo-pacific Bottlenose dolphin. You have an on board biologist and experienced crew promise an educational and memorable experience for the whole family.

After the trip at sea, you come back to The Great White House for warm soup and bread while warming up in front of a cosy fire or in summer to enjoy the warm sun. A debriefing will follow and the trip footage can be bought.

The trip also includes a visit to our newly build African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) either before or after the trip.

Overview
This is a wonderful 3-4 hour cycle around the highlights of Cape Town City. Starting close to the Greenpoint Stadium at the Greenpoint track you cycle through the Bo Kaap Malay quarter, through many historical sites wending our way through the V&A waterfront and back to Greenpoint.

What to Expect
You meet at 8.45am at the Greenpoint McDonalds traffic lights where your guide will greet you and walk you over to the Greenpoint track carpark where your bus and bikes will be.

You then start your city cycle covering many attractions like the sea front of Green Point, past the World Cup 2010 Stadium then along a network of cycle paths for a pushbike through the Bo Kaap and the Company Gardens, past ‘Desmond Tutu’s Cathedral’ , Green Market Square and the Flower Sellers. The Grand Parade, the Castle, through the waterfront and back to Greenpoint. Please provide your height when bookng so the correct sized bike for the tour can be allocated to you. You will get water on the bike.

Robben Island needs no introduction with regards to the significance of its place in South Africa’s and indeed the world’s history. As “home” to one of the world’s most infamous prisoners, statesmen and leader’s in Nelson Mandela.<

You will be collected from your accommodation at 8am and taken to the Robben Island Museum where you will board a ferry to the island which is 9km away from the V&A Waterfront (entry to Robben Island included in price). The ferry ride is approximately 45 minutes. You will then hop onto one of the buses and be led on a tour by previous inmates of the prison who will tell us stories of their’s and Nelson Mandela’s time in the prison.

The island, a World Heritage Site some 9km (5.5mi) offshore from Cape Town, was dubbed “Robben” (the Dutch word for seal) Island by early settlers in reference to the seal population at the time. Over the centuries, the island has housed a prison, hospital, mental institution, leper colony and a military base. The aforementioned Nelson Mandela spent only 18 years of the 27 years of his incarceration imprisoned on the island.

After the tour of the island you will take a return ferry and your guide will then escort you back to your accommodation at around 1pm.
